The Sigenergy SigenStor is one of the batteries Perth homeowners ask us about most. It is a modular system: one energy controller (the hybrid inverter) with battery modules stacked on it, managed through one app. This review covers how it works, what the November 2025 recall of some single-phase controllers involved, how it fits Western Power's rules and Synergy's buyback, and how the federal and WA battery rebates apply in late 2026.

This article is part of our guide to Best Home Batteries for Perth Homes: Brands and Systems Compared.

Install before 31 December 2026 to lock in this year's rebates.

From 1 January 2027 the federal battery rebate drops by about 16% (STC factor 6.8 → 5.7) and the solar panel rebate by about 20% (deeming period 5 → 4 years). It falls again in July 2027. The WA $1,300 rebate is limited to 100,000 households and is paid until the allocation runs out. Installation slots before Christmas fill fast, so lock in a date now.

How the SigenStor works

A SigenStor system is built around the Sigen Energy Controller, a hybrid inverter that takes the solar panels, the battery modules and the grid connection. Battery modules stack on the controller, so you choose the storage you need now and can add modules later within the controller's limits. An optional DC EV charger module can sit in the same stack, and everything is monitored and set up in the mySigen app.

The battery modules use lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells, the chemistry most home batteries now use because it is stable and handles many charge cycles. Module sizes, the maximum stack per controller, cycle ratings and the warranty terms are in Sigenergy's current Australian datasheet and warranty documents; ask your installer for those in writing with your quote, and check the battery is on the Clean Energy Council's approved list and on Synergy's supported list (needed for the WA rebate).

The app uses forecasts of your solar and your household use to decide when to charge, when to discharge, and when to hold energy for the evening peak. It is also VPP-capable, which matters in WA because joining a virtual power plant is a condition of the state rebate.

Safety notice: the November 2025 AC plug recall

On 19 November 2025 the ACCC published a voluntary recall (PRA 2025/20703) of Sigenergy single-phase 8, 10 and 12 kW energy controllers (SigenStor EC 8.0/10.0/12.0 SP AU and Sigen Hybrid 8.0/10.0/12.0 SP AU) fitted with a quick-connect AC plug that needs ferrules and crimping. The ACCC said the plug can overheat and become damaged, posing a fire risk; no property damage, injuries or deaths were reported. Sigenergy says the cause was installation practice rather than a product defect. The affected controllers were sold between 4 March and 18 November 2025.

If you own one: keep the system connected to the internet so it receives Sigenergy's firmware update, which monitors the unit and can temporarily reduce AC output under sustained full load; watch for a notice in the mySigen app; and your installer or Sigenergy's service partner will contact you to arrange a free replacement with an updated AC plug. Sigenergy is adding two years of warranty to affected products. You can contact Sigenergy at sigenservice.au@sigenergy.com.

Sigenergy has since moved to an OT terminal-style AC connection, a change the Clean Energy Council has approved. The recall does not cover three-phase controllers or controllers sold after 18 November 2025, so a Sigenergy system installed today is outside it.

What it does for a Perth home

Using your own solar in the evening

Perth homes make most of their solar in the middle of the day, when Synergy's buyback pays least. A battery stores that energy for the evening, when you would otherwise buy power from the grid. On Synergy's standard Home Plan (A1) every kWh you buy costs about 33 cents, so each kWh you use from the battery instead of exporting is worth far more to you.

Backup in a blackout

With the backup option set up, the SigenStor switches to battery power when the grid goes down, so the circuits you choose keep running. How long it lasts depends on the battery size and what is running; your installer should agree the backed-up circuits with you before the install.

EV charging

The optional DC charger module lets you charge an electric vehicle from the same system, including from stored solar.

How it fits WA's grid rules and buyback

Emergency solar management and the 1 May 2026 rules

Perth homes are on the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). From 1 May 2026, new and upgraded rooftop solar and battery systems on a standard connection can have up to 30 kVA of inverter capacity, and every new or upgraded system must either be able to be remotely switched off and on by your electricity retailer (emergency solar management, used only in rare grid emergencies) or be export-limited to 1.5 kW. Your installer sets this up at installation.

Synergy's Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS)

Synergy's DEBS pays 10 cents per kWh for energy exported between 3pm and 9pm and 2 cents at other times, on the first 50 kWh exported each day (rates effective 1 July 2025). Because midday exports earn only 2 cents, storing that solar for the evening is where a battery earns its keep.

Regional WA (Horizon Power)

Horizon Power customers have their own buyback rates, which vary by town. The WA battery rebate is higher for Horizon Power customers (up to $3,800).

Rebates for a Sigenergy battery in 2026

Federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The federal discount is paid as STCs on the battery's usable capacity and is taken off your quote by the installer. For batteries installed between 1 May and 31 December 2026 the factor is 6.8 STCs per usable kWh, on a tapered scale: the first 14 kWh earns the full factor, 14 to 28 kWh earns 60%, 28 to 50 kWh earns 15%, and nothing above 50 kWh. The dollar value depends on the STC market price, so the figure on your quote is the one that applies. Rebates step down on 1 January 2027, when the factor falls to 5.7.

WA Residential Battery Scheme

Synergy customers can get up to $1,300 off (Horizon Power customers up to $3,800), based on 10 kWh of usable capacity. You must sign up to a VPP product from your retailer, the battery must be on the retailer's supported list, and the installer must be accredited and on the Plenti Vendor Directory. Households with combined income under $210,000 can also get a no-interest loan of up to $10,000 over up to 10 years, through Plenti. The scheme is paid until its 100,000 rebates are used. The federal and WA rebates can be combined.

An illustrative example

A Perth home on Synergy's Home Plan (A1) makes 25 kWh of solar on a sunny day and uses 20 kWh: 10 kWh during the day and 10 kWh in the evening.

  • Without a battery: 15 kWh is exported, mostly before 3pm at 2 cents (about $0.30), and the 10 kWh used in the evening is bought at about 33 cents (about $3.33).
  • With a battery: 10 kWh of the midday surplus is stored and used that evening. You give up about $0.20 of export credit and avoid about $3.33 of grid purchases, a saving of roughly $3.10 that day.

Illustration only, using Synergy's published rates as at 1 July 2026 (Home Plan A1 33.26 c/kWh) and DEBS rates (2 c and 10 c/kWh). Real savings depend on your usage, the season, your tariff and the system size, and change with prices. It leaves out the supply charge and the system cost.

Frequently asked questions

Was my Sigenergy battery recalled?

Only single-phase 8, 10 and 12 kW energy controllers with the quick-connect AC plug, sold between 4 March and 18 November 2025, are covered. If yours is one of them, keep it online for the firmware update and wait for your installer or Sigenergy's service partner to arrange the free replacement. If you are not sure, ask your installer or check the mySigen app.

Can a SigenStor power my whole home in a blackout?

It can back up chosen circuits, and with enough battery and inverter capacity it can run much of a home. How long it lasts depends on the battery size and your use during the outage.

Does it work with existing solar panels?

The Sigen Energy Controller is a hybrid inverter, so it can usually take over existing panels or be added alongside an existing system. Your installer will check the panels, the switchboard and the export rules for your home.

How do I get the rebates?

Through the installer. An accredited installer applies the federal STC discount and, if you are eligible and on the Plenti Vendor Directory, the WA rebate, and both come off the price on your quote.
